David Saul

Founder and Managing Director

Determined, resilient and principled, David Saul is the founder and managing director of Saul SMSF.

Having launched Saul SMSF as one of Australia’s first dedicated SMSF audit businesses in 2007, David has built this award-winning company from its humble origins into an industry leader, auditing more than $4.3 billion in SMSF assets annually.

After completing a Bachelor of Financial Administration, he worked at a number of leading accountancy firms qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. A growing interest in SMSFs led David to become an early member of the SMSF Association, and one of the first to obtain SMSF Specialist Advisor accreditation in 2005.

His tireless work on behalf of Saul SMSF clients was recognised with David crowned NSW SMSF Auditor of the Year in 2018, and he was nominated as a national finalist for Auditor and SMSF Auditor of the Year awards in 2019 and 2020. His commitment and contribution to the SMSF industry was further acknowledged in 2020 when David was awarded Fellow Member status of the SMSF Association.

But what many may not know is that David lives something of a double life. Born into a long line of proud fishermen in northern NSW, his entrepreneurial skills were honed in his family’s commercial fishing business, a venture that taught him about resourcefulness, integrity, and the true value of a hard day’s work.

David left the fishing industry during its financial woes in the 1980s, but never lost his passion for the rod and reel and returned to the industry in recent years to establish a commercial fishing business Yamba Wild. He also serves as executive secretary of fisher representative body, The NSW Catchers Trust, which owns 50% of the Sydney Fish Market, and has been an instrumental voice in the ongoing redevelopment of this world-renowned seafood retail destination.
